Ophthalmic Clinic Scribe

Overview

Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Scribe to join our team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. This position provides accurate documentation, summarization of ocular examinations and recommendations, ICD
10 coding and CPT in patient charts, while maintaining patient flow and communication regarding appointment status at the Kingwood Clinic. Candidates must be able to travel to various clinics to meet patient and provider needs, and support clinic hours Monday through Friday between 6:30am and 6:30pm. Schedules are provided weekly based on provider clinic, patient and surgery schedules. Weekend hours may be available for clinic staff.

• Correctly summarize and document what the physician verbalizes during an examination, including charting of the examination, additions to the chief complaint, assessment and treatment recommendations with justification, and timely closing of patient charts.
• Accurate ICD
  10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
• Observe and assist during the exam as needed, including patient assistance, providing medications or instruments as directed, and responding to medical emergencies.
• Maintain awareness of patient verbal and nonverbal cues; provide written instructions and patient education materials as needed.
• Ensure patient understands all instructions and accurately document amendments to charts per practice protocols.
• Maintain patient flow, including confirming insurance authorization prior to treatment.
• Provide support to the clinic by assisting Ophthalmic Technician duties as needed.
• Alert physician to patient-related forms needing completion and guide patients to front desk for proper follow-up.
• Ensure examination room is stocked and safe for patient entry and exit; communicate schedule changes including emergencies to the physician.
• Foster effective communication among physicians and staff to minimize clinic flow disruptions.
• Perform other tasks as assigned.

• Knowledge of examination components for appropriate CPT coding and quality reporting.
• Understanding of Medicare and common insurance requirements; HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; team-oriented and detail-focused.
• Ability to multi-task and stay organized; computer literacy.
• Accurate spelling in charting; basic math skills;
  English fluency (bilingual preferred).
• Ability to educate patients on eye drop instillation and treatment plan explanations; familiarity with medical/ophthalmic terminology.

• High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.

• At least 6 months of experience in a medical office, preferably ophthalmology; scribe certification (certified ophthalmic assistant) preferred.

• Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods; move between exam rooms as needed.
• Successful typing or legible handwriting in dim lighting; ability to hear softly spoken words.
• Lifting up to 30 pounds.
