Job Summary

Behavioral Health Services (BHS) is a multidisciplinary team providing a gold standard of care to support Memorial Hermann patients and connect them to the most appropriate level of care. Our goal is to increase access to behavioral health treatment services, promote better health outcomes for patients with chronic or urgent needs, reduce unnecessary ER visits, and decrease incarcerations.

Shift: Sun - Tue 7p-7a with every other Wednesday, 11p-7a

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Masters Degree in Social Work and licensure as a clinician or undergoing clinical supervision; or Master’s degree in counseling or related field.

Licenses/Certification: Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage Family Therapist-Associate (LMFT-A), or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT).

Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • Five (5) years psychiatric/healthcare field experience preferred; internships considered.
  • Knowledge of best practices in working with various psychiatric populations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proven capability in conducting evaluations to determine psychosocial and psychiatric needs of adults, children and families.
  • Ability to complete thorough risk assessments for suicide and homicide.
  • Effective use of DSM in diagnosing mental illness.
  • Ability to recommend appropriate psychiatric levels of care.
  • Applies crisis intervention techniques and evidence-based counseling with individuals and families.
  • Engages family systems and engages families in the patient’s treatment.
  • Maintain clinician annual core competencies (HIPAA/Privacy, Cultural Competence, Information Security Awareness, Domestic Violence, Levels of Care, Medications, Substance Use, DSM, Suicide/Homicide Assessments, Psychiatric Emergencies).
  • Interpersonal communication, negotiation and collaboration with patients, families, physicians and health care team colleagues.
  • Openness to working with diverse backgrounds; ability to connect patients with community resources inside and outside the MHHS network.
  • Commitment to Partners-in-Caring and MHHS values in interactions and service delivery.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Assess patients based on Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessments, evaluating psychosocial risk factors, history, severity of symptoms, and support systems.
  • Evaluate for self-injury or harmful behaviors and recommend precautions.
  • Consult with BHS medical directors and attending physicians for case review and medication recommendations.
  • Provide psychiatric diagnoses and document clinical criteria and symptoms.
  • Provide counseling and treatment to individuals, couples, families or groups, building therapeutic relationships and addressing intrapersonal, interpersonal, and psychosocial dynamics.
  • Educate adults, children and families experiencing emotional disturbances, mental illness, or substance-related problems.
  • Intervene with patients and families regarding consequences of illness and disability; mobilize resources to meet identified needs.
  • Provide crisis counseling and intervention related to treatment decisions.
  • Advocate for patient and family empowerment to make informed health care decisions and access needed services.
  • Ensure safe care following policies and standards within budget, including time and supply management, productivity, and accuracy.
  • Support professional growth through continuing education and mentorship; perform as preceptor or resource to less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
