Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (AS) – Houston Eye Associates
Location:
1415 North Loop West, Suite 400, Houston, TX 77008 – Some minimal travel needed with doctor to nearby locations.
Contributes to the organization by working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advanced, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Properly stock, prepare, and maintain the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
- Review patient chart for accuracy of information.
- Prepare patients for physician exam and perform tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physician preference.
- Assist with in‑office procedures.
- Prepare and ensure all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in‑office procedures; clean room after procedure.
- Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
- Act as a scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into the electronic record.
- Order diagnostic tests electronically and submit prescription refills approved by the physician.
- Assist with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
- Assist with diagnostic testing and follow‑up on diagnostic tests when directed by physician.
- Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
- Assist in training other ophthalmic assistants.
- Meet and adhere to HEAs policies and procedures, uphold the highest ethical principles and patient confidentiality, and comply with all State and Federal regulations.
- Other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.
- Visual Assessment
- Visual Field Testing (CVF, Amsler Grid, HVF)
- Pupil Assessment
- Tonometry (iCare, Goldmann Applanation, and Tonopen)
- Keratometry (manual and automated)
- Ocular Motility Testing
- Lensometry (manual and automated)
- Refraction (utilizing phoroptor, duochrome, fogging, Prince rule, trial frame)
- Retinoscopy and Refinement (at the COT and COMT level)
- Basic Contact Lens knowledge
- Ophthalmic Coding
- Scribing
- Continuing Education including JCAHPO & ABOC

EducationHigh School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
Certifications & LicensesBasic Life Support (BLS). Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO (COA, COT, or COMT) certification within 1 year of employment.
ExperienceMinimum 1‑2 years' experience working with an ophthalmologist. Bilingual Spanish preferred.
