Performs complex, highly skilled technical work in the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of ITS hardware, data communications equipment, and industrial control systems. Provides leadership and oversight for Technical Hardware Analyst I and II staff, ensuring reliable operation of Houston’s traffic communications network, which includes Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Mid‑Block Counter (MBC) devices, Bluetooth devices, and a large fiber‑optic backbone.
Responsibilities- Lead and mentor Technical Hardware Analyst I and II staff, providing technical guidance, training, and oversight.
- Design, evaluate, and implement ITS communication networks and microprocessor‑based control systems.
- Troubleshoot and maintain Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), including airport systems, ensuring reliable operation and timely messaging.
- Manage and optimize fiber‑optic communication networks, including design, installation, repair, and documentation of cable layouts.
- Diagnose and resolve complex data communications failures; coordinate with vendors to restore service and integrate new equipment.
- Maintain and support ITS devices such as Bluetooth sensors, CCTV cameras, MBCs, RS900 Rugged Comm switches, battery backup systems, and signal cabinets.
- Operate test equipment to isolate and repair hardware/software or cable‑related problems; calibrate both digital and analog components.
- Evaluate network design and recommend improvements for performance, resiliency, and security.
- Prepare and maintain statistical reports, inventory records, and project status updates.
- Stay current with industry changes, software upgrades, and emerging ITS applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and extended periods of walking on rough surfaces. Employees may experience occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less‑than‑optimal temperature and air conditions, as well as routine exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness, and unpleasant air environments. The role may also involve routine contact with soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
EducationalRequirements
Requires an Associate's degree (two‑year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.
Experience RequirementsFour years of experience in the design, installation, operation and/or maintenance of a computerized network or industrial control system are required. Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year‑for‑year basis.
License RequirementsMay require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. (AP 2‑2).
Preferences- Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1‑6.***
