  • Combine structural engineering expertise with underwriting, risk management, and team leadership.
  • Directly influence how the company evaluates risk, establishes underwriting guidelines, and improves the efficiency and consistency of a high-volume underwriting operation.
  • Work closely with builders, underwriting, claims, and leadership, giving you meaningful visibility and the opportunity to shape processes and decisions.
  • Enjoy autonomy to make decisions, solve problems, and improve the way the team operates while knowing when to bring in leadership when needed.
Why This Job

This role sits at the intersection of structural engineering, construction, underwriting, and risk management. You’ll use your engineering expertise to evaluate residential construction risk, guide underwriting decisions, develop and maintain underwriting guidelines, and help the team consistently apply those standards.

Oversee a small, experienced underwriting team and serve as the technical resource they can rely on when evaluating more complex risks. You’ll review building plans, assess structural risk, interpret applicable building codes, and work directly with builders to troubleshoot questions and ensure projects align with underwriting requirements.

This is an ideal opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, and teaching others—and who wants to move beyond traditional design work into a role where their technical expertise directly influences business and risk decisions.

What You'll Actually Do:
  • Lead the Underwriting Team by providing oversight, guidance, and support to a small team of experienced underwriting professionals, helping ensure consistent application of underwriting standards and efficient execution of day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Evaluate Construction Risk by reviewing residential building plans and assessing structural risk, construction practices, and other factors that may impact warranty exposure.
  • Apply Engineering Expertise to Underwriting by using your structural engineering background and knowledge of Texas building codes and construction practices to inform risk decisions and underwriting guidelines.
  • Develop & Maintain Underwriting Guidelines by helping establish, refine, and update standards based on emerging risks, builder practices, claims experience, and changes in building codes.
  • Partner with Builders by communicating directly with builders and construction professionals to answer technical questions, troubleshoot issues, clarify requirements, and help resolve potential problems before they become larger issues.
  • Advise Claims by providing engineering expertise when claims involve structural concerns, including reviewing proposed repair plans and advising the claims team on appropriate engineering solutions.
  • Improve Processes & Efficiency by evaluating how underwriting work is performed, identifying opportunities to streamline a high-volume operation, and implementing practical improvements without sacrificing quality or risk controls.
  • Coach & Develop the Team by helping non-technical underwriting professionals understand the engineering principles behind underwriting decisions, teaching them how to evaluate risk, and building their ability to make sound decisions independently.
  • Serve as a Technical Resource across underwriting, claims, and operations, translating complex engineering concepts into practical guidance for non-technical stakeholders.
What You Bring:
  • Education & Licensure: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred; EIT/ability to obtain a PE may be considered for the right candidate.
  • Structural Engineering

    Experience:

5+ years of experience in structural, civil, or related engineering,…
