Position: Interpreter I, Sign Language

Interpreter I, Sign Language role at Inside Higher Ed – Houston, Texas

Job Summary

Primary responsibility is to provide direct interpretation and to perform duties that will aid in the provision of the highest quality interpreting/transliterating services. The duties include but are not limited to assignment preparation, consumer relations, and professional development.

Essential Functions

  • Interpret and transliterate basic to higher level academic classes, lectures, student activity events, and other special events as needed, where receptive interpreting would be required.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing notes and course outline, previewing required texts and course materials, and speaking with faculty, speakers, and/or students.
  • Work collaboratively with department staff, faculty, college staff, students, and administrators.
  • Meet regularly with the Supervisor of Interpreting Services to review evaluations from consumers and from supervisor observations for development activities.
  • Assess the language or communication modes of the customers/served.
  • Demonstrate continuous professional development by upgrading interpreting skills, developing specialized content expertise, and enhancing interpersonal communication skills through participation in continuing education, in‑service training, and related educational opportunities.
  • May travel to alternative sites for interpreting assignments as needed.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • 2 years experience preferably in a college or university setting required.

Licensing & Certification

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreter (BEI) Level I, Level II, and Basic.

Special Skills

  • MS Office Programs.

  • Texas BEI/RID Code of Professional Conduct and Deaf Culture.

Working Conditions

General Office. Must be able to perform all job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations; remain in a stationary position during the shift; move items weighing up to 25 pounds; position self to operate job equipment; apply established protocols in a timely manner.
