The PT Interpreter I functions as an intermediate-level, professional interpreter for students, faculty, staff and administration that are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). Interpreters strive to advance in sign language skill proficiency in order to provide the highest level of professional interpreter services possible.
Interpreters support and promote all persons’ right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments.
- for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- for all LSC students, faculty, staff and administration, and for visitors to LSC
- in all requested Lone Star College locations and settings
- at the appropriate language and register level
- Strong fluency in both Sign Language and English with the ability to preserve the meaning, tone, and emotional value of the original speech and have a firm grasp of both the source and the target languages, including all idioms
Ability and willingness to accept interpreting assignments at a variety of times and locations within the LSC service area, as needed, which includes some evenings and weekends - Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language and English, including the meaning and spelling of words and an understanding of the rules of composition and grammar
- Ability to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, and other related federal, state, and local regulations
- Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct as adopted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission
- Thorough knowledge of the Deaf culture and the Deaf community
- Basic knowledge of computer use in the workplace is required, including the ability to type, utilize internet search engines and word processing software, and to maintain a work calendar using proprietary software
- Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and to quickly develop a rapport with a wide variety of people
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including tact and diplomacy
- Must be sensitive to cultural differences
- Excellent listening and customer service skills
- Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
- Uses fingers (fine finger dexterity), hands and arms to communicate using Sign Language for extended periods of time for most of the working day
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
