Catholic Charities seeks a Staff Attorney for its Crime Victims Assistance Program in Houston‑Galveston. The role provides legal representation, case management, outreach, and supervision for immigrant clients within the St. Frances Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance.
Responsibilities- Legal Assistance: Provide direct representation to clients before USCIS, Asylum Office, immigration courts, and related agencies. Conduct legal intake, draft petitions, conduct research, and prepare memoranda, motions, or briefs.
- Case Management: Maintain client files, case notes, filings, and calendars. Monitor a caseload of 30‑40 active cases and keep up to date with immigration regulations.
- Meetings: Attend team, staff, funder, and community meetings as required.
- Contract Compliance: Comply with all contract obligations, provide data for grant reporting, submit monthly time logs, and participate in required trainings.
- Charla and Outreach: Present at Charlas and community outreach events in Spanish and English, offering legal consultations and education on immigration relief.
- Supervision: Direct and supervise Legal Assistants, Paralegals, and interns on legal services.
- Other: Perform additional duties such as coordinating with community partners, attending staff retreats, and assisting with special events.
- Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from an ABA‑accredited law school.
- Licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas and member of the Texas Bar; or obtain a Texas bar license no later than one year after employment.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to handle high‑volume caseloads and multiple deadlines.
- Competence in basic typing and MS Office applications.
- Demonstrated multicultural sensitivity.
- Confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Experience working with low‑income immigrant communities.
