International Assignment
- Location:

Wales, UK - Approximate duration: 24 Months

The Contract Manager will act as the EPCM commercial governance lead at Port Talbot, responsible for managing contractor interfaces, ensuring contract adherence, preventing claims, controlling variations, and maintaining commercial discipline through the execution stage.

While contractual ownership, PO issuance and commercial authority remain with TSUK, this role ensures that contract execution aligns with scope, schedule, deliverables, and technical requirements, minimizing commercial exposure and disputes.

The Contract Manager becomes the link between technical progress and commercial clarity - protecting project value and ensuring decisions are backed by contractual logic.

Responsibilities

Contract Administration & Execution Governance

Interpret and implement contract terms, conditions, milestones, obligations, and deliverables.

Monitor contractor performance vs scope, schedule, payment terms & deliverables.

Track contract compliance, insurance, guarantees, warranties, LD applicability etc.

Maintain contract correspondence, approvals & commercial communication trail.

Change & Variation Control

Manage Change Control Process - scope deviation, technical changes, claims triggers.

Review change requests for technical validity, cost/time impact, documentation completeness.

Coordinate with Engineering & Procurement for quantification of variations.

Maintain Change Log, VO Register & Impact Dashboard.

Claims Prevention & Dispute Avoidance

Identify early commercial risk indicators and potential claim situations.

Ensure instructions / decisions are documented with contractual traceability.

Support resolution through negotiation or technical clarification when disputes arise.

Assist TSUK in defending contractual positions with structured documentation.

Contract Reporting & Steering Visibility

Provide contract status reports, risk outlook & exposure summary for monthly reviews.

Maintain visibility of milestone payments, retention, security release conditions.

Present key commercial issues to Steering Committee with recommended actions.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Work closely with Procurement Manager, Construction Manager & Engineering Manager.

Coordinate with TSUK legal/commercial team for decisions & escalations.

Participate in contractor meetings to ensure commitments & obligations are tracked.

Maintain strong vendor/contractor relationships while protecting project interests.

Qualifications

25 years experience in Contracts/Commercial management in EPC/EPCM projects.

Strong exposure to steel/metals/process industry contracts.

Hands-on experience in contract administration during execution phase, not just pre-award.

Capability to evaluate technical impacts financially (scope, time, LDs, variation handling).

Prior experience in brownfield mega projects or heavy industrial environments.

Ability to work onsite Port Talbot ~2 years with required travel flexibility.

Preferred:

Familiarity with FIDIC/NEC/JCT or similar contracting frameworks.

Experience with UK contract governance advantageous.

CDI/TCE USA or international EPCM delivery background preferred.

Behavioral Attributes:

Detail-oriented with strong documentation discipline

Analytical mindset - reads contracts and sees risk patterns

Ability to push back professionally when claims lack basis

Negotiation framing skills - firm yet collaborative

Structured thinker - works through logic, not pressure

Comfortable interacting with technical & commercial stakeholders

Confident communicator - summarizes contract positions clearly

Leadership Attributes Required

Commercial guardian mindset - protects TSUK interest through discipline & clarity.

Calm under conflict - manages disputes without escalation unless necessary.

Preventive rather than reactive - spots claim early instead of defending them later.

Transparent communicator - flags risks with mitigation options, not just problems.

Backbone with diplomacy - firm with contractors, cooperative with stakeholders.

Strong governance orientation - drives documentation rigor & contract traceability.

Strategic thinker - balances schedule, cost, and contract constraints smartly
