Association Aquatics Director

Brief Description

Develops, organizes, implements and evaluates YMCA aquatics programs with a focus on quality, safety, youth development and healthy living for the YMCA of Greater Houston. Works with the Association Aquatics Team to focus on program development, innovation, compliance, safety, strategic initiatives and revenue growth. Serves as the technical expert and resource for aquatic safety and programs.

Essential Functions
  • Develops strategies to increase program quality to grow program retention, impact and revenue.
    • Ensure that Centers are following program standards, best practices and utilizing association tools and resources.
    • Work with Aquatics Director to determine staffing needs during peak program times to ensure consistency of program quality.
    • Regularly visit and evaluate on‑site and off‑site programs. Provide feedback to Center Leaders and Aquatics Directors regarding issues and determine resources needed.
    • Work with Aquatics Directors to identify program opportunities that would increase revenue and/or community impact.
    • Make recommendations on how to maximize program offerings to yield higher revenue.
    • Monitor program registration and provide statistical reports each session, month, or as requested by Association.
    • Monitor program return on investment (ROI) to assess need and operational effectiveness.
  • Increases innovation in aquatics by working with Association Aquatics team to determine need and priority.
    • Research technology.
    • Develop new programs.
    • Find ways to drive traffic.
    • Identify opportunities to serve more people.
  • Increases aquatic safety and compliance for Association Aquatics.
    • Perform Association audits.
    • Hold Centers accountable for aquatic safety guidelines and provide assistance to Aquatics Directors as needed.
    • Assure compliance with State, County, City and YMCA standards.
    • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director of Aquatics Programs and Safety to provide guidance and identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Evaluate center guard zones and provide guidance on improvement.
    • Ensure all staff meet certification minimums by conducting monthly evaluations of certifications.
  • Uses technical expertise to provide support to assigned centers and programs.
    • Serve as point person for all aquatics questions from Aquatics Directors.
    • Identify safety, revenue, and operational effectiveness opportunities that align with the Association plan and communicate with Center Aquatics Directors to implement.
    • Review pool schedules, usage, and determine ROI in non‑peak times.
    • Assist in sharing content knowledge with aquatics leaders.
    • Serve as the center Aquatics Director when there is a vacancy. Provide lifeguard services at center pools during significant staff shortages.
    • Attend 4 hours in‑service per month, rotating Centers.
    • Assist with safety and program development opportunities.
    • Assist Aquatics Director with in‑service workshops as needed.
    • Provide Association Day Camp Training for Directors.
  • Works with Association Aquatics quality teams to determine best practices, tools, resources, and trainings that fall within the Association strategic plan and department priorities.
    • Provide research on safety issues and input on standard updates.
    • Monitor hiring progress and communicate with assigned centers to develop a plan.
    • Assist center leadership staff with interviews and give input on hiring when needed.
    • Assist with new Director onboarding.
    • Attend Association Aquatics quality team meetings and participate with Aquatics Director teams as identified by the chart of work.
    • Identify ways to increase operational effectiveness.
    • Attend cabinet meetings.
  • Supports the YMCA of Greater Houston's Eliminating Drowning Initiative.
  • Assists Aquatics Director efforts to establish the YMCA as the provider of aquatics safety and quality programs.
  • Works with Aquatics Director and Executive Director to identify opportunities and grow year‑round safety around water programs and gain support and funding.
  • Participates in G4G tracking for 2 hours a week for 8 weeks.
