Machinist – 2nd Shift
Location: Houston, Westplain Campus
Work Environment: Monday – Friday onsite
Rate of Pay: $30‑$33/hour based on years of experience

Job Summary: The CNC Machinist produces machined parts by setting up and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine, maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping records and maintaining equipment and supplies. You’ll work collaboratively with other multi‑skilled technicians under the direction of the Shop Supervisor.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities- Setting up and operating various machines and tools on a 3‑ or 4‑axis CNC.
- Reading and interpreting work orders to select proper work center and identify required tooling and/or programs necessary to perform the operation.
- Listening to machining operation in order to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and compensating for problems.
- Obtaining and installing proper tooling, such as jaws, chucks, tombstones, fixtures, and cutting tools.
- Using various gauges and precision instruments (intra‑micros, profilometers, calipers, IDOD micrometers, indicators, and special gauging equipment) to inspect production pieces and make necessary program and tooling adjustments.
- Cleaning and removing burrs after the operation is completed.
- Assisting manufacturing engineering in process improvements.
- Training other employees on a variety of machine tools and operations.
- Returning tooling and reporting any difficulties with tooling or material.
- Training/mentoring lower‑level CNC machinists.
- Maintaining continuity among shifts by documenting and communicating actions taken and any necessary further steps.
Skills and Abilities
- Read, write, speak and comprehend English.
- Proficient in basic math: add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with fractional measurements and decimals.
- Set up, adjust, and operate all machine tools to produce parts within specifications from blueprints.
- Read and understand manufacturing mechanical blueprints.
- Accurate keyboard and monitor use to enter work order data and correct qualities.
- Hold very close tolerances and surface finish requirements.
- Exceptional teamwork skills and strong communication abilities.
- Working knowledge or ability to learn to use a micrometer, depth micrometer, dial indicators, CMM, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Demonstrated history of good attendance and a safe work record.
- Maintain conscientious work behaviors: work ethic, safety standards, quality, costs, and on‑time delivery (OTD).
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- 5+ years of manual machining experience using CNC lathes, mills, and surface grinders.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and other documents.
- Proficiency with measuring equipment such as calipers, gauges and micrometers.
- Computer proficiency.
- Experience with stainless steel or duplex stainless steel preferred.
- CNC horizontal mill experience preferred.
- Lean manufacturing methods preferred.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently through process improvement structures; strong verbal and written communication; strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
