Job SummaryThe Registered Nurse on the Medical Surgical Inpatient Unit is responsible for admitting patients, providing nursing care to medical and post‑operative patients, and developing individualized nursing care plans. Teamwork is essential—employees may be cross‑trained to support other clinical areas as needed.
Essential Functions- Maintain a clean, therapeutic environment; provide instructions as directed by physicians or physician assistants.
- Ensure supplies and equipment are available and functional.
- Assist with patient admission and preparation for procedures.
- Conduct initial assessments and determine nursing needs; communicate discharge needs.
- Explain procedures to reduce patient anxiety.
- Identify and monitor patients’ physical and mental status; report significant changes.
- Verify surgical consent and pre‑operative test results before procedures.
- Make pre‑op and post‑op calls; provide emotional support to patients and families.
- Document care accurately in the medical record; implement doctor’s orders promptly.
- Educate patients and families and maintain effective working relationships.
- Demonstrate clinical problem‑solving, critical thinking, and evidence‑based decision making.
- Plan for routine events and proactively manage emergencies.
- Use downtime efficiently and support team members; adapt to unexpected changes.
- Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality per policy and HIPAA.
- Follow safety rules, report safety incidents, and maintain departmental policies.
- Perform additional duties as needed and collaborate with all clinical staff.
- Proficient use of computers and relevant software applications.
- Strong attention to detail and thorough completion of tasks.
- Self‑control and composure to manage emotions and avoid aggressive behavior.
- Ability to follow, plan, and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient conditions.
- Compliance with facility policies, continuing education, and the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
- Effective communication skills for collaborative practice.
- Quick physical and mental response to changing priorities or patient conditions.
- High stress tolerance and calm conflict resolution.
- Flexibility and adaptability to workplace changes.
- Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.

- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and EMR (Vision).
- Energy and enthusiasm for learning new skills.
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing or related field.
- Registered Nurse license in Texas—must remain active and unencumbered.
- Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
- Minimum one year of peri‑operative and inpatient experience.
Compensation will be determined by education, experience, knowledge, and ability. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check and drug screening.
