What the Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) does

Under general supervision, the RN provides professional nursing care for patients following national and company standards. The RN recognizes physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of care, participates in quality initiatives, and supports compliance with the US Oncology Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards.
  • Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and instructional materials.
  • Prepare and administer therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician.
  • Administer all medications and blood products using correct dosage, route, time, and technique.
  • Assure pre‑authorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to therapy administration where applicable.
  • Facilitate dose modification by assessing patient status, labs, consulting protocols or treatment plans, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications and symptom management.
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of assigned patient care and treatments provided.
  • Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
Qualifications Education/Training Level I
  • Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education (BSN preferred).
  • RN state license and current registration with the state board of nursing in the practicing state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Must maintain continuing education requirements.
  • Entry level – 0–3 years nursing experience; oncology experience strongly preferred.
Level II
  • Minimum three (3) years of nursing experience; oncology experience strongly preferred.
Level Senior
  • In addition to Levels I and II:
    • Minimum five (5) years nursing experience, including at least one year in oncology strongly preferred.
    • Oncology certification preferred.
Working Conditions

The work environment may involve exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.

Physical Requirements

Requires full range of motion, handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, standing and walking for extensive periods, and occasionally lifting items up to 40 lbs.
