Responsibilities- Administer immunizations, generate encounter creations, and perform phlebotomy services during the week of processing, augmenting clinical nursing support within the trainee health flight during absence of other team nurses due to illness, leave or deployment.
- Recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
- Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF.
- Initiate, perform, and complete assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
- Navigate Electronic Medical Record (Genesis) software to order studies, medications, create lab labels, and armbands for a large population, verifying for accuracy.
- Perform independent, comprehensive triage telephonically, face to face, and via secure messaging to assess severity of the patient's condition and the need for provider intervention.
- Effectively document nursing care delivered in the ambulatory care setting, both written and electronic, of all activities in accordance with unit/medical treatment facility requirements.
- Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals.
- Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness.
- Perform/assist with procedures such as administration of oxygen, visual acuity tests, EKGs, irrigation of eyes and ears, tympanograms, splinting, phlebotomy, and other clinic-specific procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift; ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed; ensure medication/supplies are replenished.
- Participate in the orientation and training of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
- Work various shifts or augment clinical nursing support during the absence of other team nurses due to illness, leave or deployment.
- Collaborate with the physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or clinical nurse specialist in the health care/education of patients.
- Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate.
- Complete assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions, use judgment in selecting appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments, and accurately recognize, report, and record relevant patient information.
- Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.
- Observe, identify, and respond to the patient's needs for care, including medication, equipment assisted care, and patient/family education.
- Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) and perform treatments according to established policies/procedures.
- Promote preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physical/health assessments, positive health behaviors, and self‑care skills through education and counseling.
- Provide instructions to patients relevant to health maintenance, birth control, etc.
- Complete orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (JAW) unit guidelines.
- Participate in committees, functions, and other meetings as directed; provide relevant and timely information; assist with decision‑making and process improvement initiatives; participate in customer service initiatives designed to enhance health services.
- Ensure a safe work environment, employee safe work habits, and patient safety per JAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
- Support with the processing of up to 900 trainees in initial entry in a 5‑day work week.
- One year of practical or vocational nurse experience in a clinic, lab, or immunization setting.
- Strong computer skills.
Location:
Joint Base San Antonio, 59th Medical Wing. The Licensed Vocational Nurse shall receive notification two weeks prior to reassignment to another location within a 40‑mile commuting radius of their assigned MTF.
