As a licensed staff RN at Houston Methodist, the RN PRN (Registered Nurse Per Diem) operates at the Competent to Proficient level of Benner’s model, providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population. This role involves conducting assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records while communicating and collaborating with physicians, the interprofessional team, and families to facilitate compassionate, efficient, and quality care outcomes.
EssentialFunctions People
- Uses therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health‑care team.
- Contributes to teamwork by staying aware of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests.
- Provides staff education, preceptorship, and peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve department scores for turnover, retention, and employee engagement.
- Follows patient- and family‑centered care standards and the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
- Conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatments, and maintains accurate medical records.
- Develops, updates, and communicates plan of care in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
- Provides patient teaching, evaluates comprehension, and adapts teaching methods accordingly.
- Helps drive improvement of patient satisfaction scores through accountability to service standards.
- Adheres to nursing process standards and regulatory requirements as outlined in the Professional Nursing Practice document.
- Identifies practice improvements with evidence‑based research to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes.
- Coordinates care for complex patients using accurate documentation and evidence‑based clinical judgement.
- Improves unit-based quality and safety scores through accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration across teams.
- Manages time efficiently, documents care promptly, minimizes incidental overtime, and prioritizes daily tasks.
- Contributes to unit resource utilization, capital and operational budgeting, and meeting department financial targets.
- Identifies and presents innovative, evidence‑based solutions for patient care or unit operations.
- Champions new care pathways or service line implementation and supports shared governance initiatives.
- Education:
Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing. - Experience:
Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. - Licenses & Certifications
Required:- Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure (Compact). Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days of establishing residency.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA.
- Other credentials as defined by the unit/service line.
- Licenses & Certifications Preferred:
- Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification in applicable specialty area.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in nursing competencies through assessments and evaluations.
- Fluent English communication (speaking, reading, writing) necessary for safety and security.
- Effective communication with patients, providers, and families using positive language.
- Strong assessment, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Independent judgment in collaboration with physicians and the care team.
- Critical thinking and clinical judgment within Nurse Practice Act limits.
- Time‑management proficiency.
- Professional contributions in line with the Clinical Career Path program.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and other relevant products.

Scrubs required; uniform, business professional, other department‑approved attire not required. - On‑Call:
May be required during emergencies; listed as no. - Travel:
Travel within the Houston Metropolitan area yes; outside the area no.
