Position Summary
A Court Security Officer (CSO) is a specialized security position providing protective services at or around United States Federal Courthouses or other areas as assigned under a contract to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS). CSOs generally provide security services under some limited supervision from a Lead CSO and the District Supervisor who reports to the Contract Manager (CM). This is a union position.
The CSO position involves performing fixed-post, mobile, or foot patrols while maintaining situational awareness and making decisions or taking actions consistent with established post orders, facility rules, guidelines, and protocols. Duties may include working in austere and uncomfortable conditions for prolonged periods, including inclement weather, while performing walking, standing, searching, surveillance, or sitting duties essential to security functions.
Responsibilities- Enforce the District's entry and identification system.
- Test and report emergency equipment.
- Patrol court facilities and grounds according to post orders.
- Man USMS authorized stationary posts.
- Provide surveillance on incoming traffic to detect threats before reaching screening areas.
- Provide armed escort services for judges, court personnel, jurors, and other individuals as needed.
- Secure off-site and remote judicial functions where access can be controlled and screening conducted.
- Direct traffic, control lights, and monitor vehicles and pedestrians as per post orders.
- Occasionally provide courtroom security during hearings.
- Maintain security presence in courtrooms, enforce federal laws and orders, and handle articles found in facilities.
- Keep supervisors informed of unusual occurrences and important events.
- Monitor alarms, radio traffic, and other information sources, and respond accordingly.
- Report and address alarms, criminal acts, and requests for assistance.
- Inspect vehicles and pedestrians entering/exiting the facility.
- Use issued equipment properly and prevent prohibited articles from entering or leaving.
- Escort individuals or vehicles as per protocols.
- Maintain necessary licenses, certifications, and training records.
- Communicate via radios, phones, or other devices according to rules.
- Monitor equipment and report damages or losses.
- Perform duties regardless of weather conditions.
- Log property and equipment movements.
- Ensure security of government property and report unauthorized removals.
- Conduct patrols and inspections regularly.
- Issue badges or passes to authorized personnel.
- Monitor electronic access control and RFID systems, and respond to alarms.
- Manage access during non-working hours for authorized personnel.
- Report facility deficiencies.
- Perform surveillance for unauthorized activity or breaches.
- Support scheduled events and emergencies as needed.
- Maintain logs and administrative documents.
- Cooperate with law enforcement and testify in proceedings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 3 years of civilian law enforcement experience or equivalent military law enforcement with arrest authority within the last 7 years.
- Completion of a recognized law enforcement training academy or program.
- Successful background check, drug test, and physical exam.
- Valid, unrestricted state driver’s license.
- Fluent in English reading, speaking, and writing.
- Meet medical and physical fitness requirements.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements
