Fabricator, prop maker

Smash Design is a fabrication studio specializing in immersive brand activations, experiential events, themed environments, and large-scale three-dimensional art and props. The Fabricator, Prop Maker is a full-time, on-site role based in Greater Houston. This role is responsible for building and assembling custom props, scenic elements, and large-scale installations using a variety of materials such as wood, foam, plastics, metal, and fabrics. Day-to-day tasks include interpreting design drawings, measuring and cutting materials, operating shop tools and equipment, finishing and painting surfaces, and assisting with installation and strike at event or client locations.

The Fabricator collaborates with designers and project managers to ensure builds meet creative, safety, and quality standards, while maintaining a clean and organized workspace and adhering to project timelines.

• Candidates should possess practical fabrication skills, including hands-on experience with carpentry, scenic construction, and prop building.
• Candidates should have a minimum of 4
  -5 years in professional paint work for commercial environments spraying automotive or industrial grade paint finishes.
• Candidates should possess proficiency with shop tools and equipment, such as saws, sanders, drills, and basic hand tools, along with safe operating practices.
• Candidates should possess skills in surface finishing, including bondo/ surface finishing with an understanding of how to use proper sanding and grit techniques to achieve a mirror like finish.
• Candidates should possess strong spatial awareness, measurement accuracy, and the ability to read and interpret sketches, build plans, or technical drawings. .
• Do you have the ability to understand structrual framing. Such as what steel tubing size is needed for a steel armature inside a sculpture and bolt sheer strength and fastening.
