Position Title: Lifeguard

Hours and days off may vary to meet department responsibilities. Number of hours may vary and include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays and shall not exceed 999 hours annually.
Lifeguards provide a safe and clean aquatic environment. Their primary duty is to monitor pool activities and ensure member safety. Lifeguards must possess extensive knowledge of lifeguarding, rules and regulations of the aquatic environment, and overall operations and facility amenities of the department. Staff is expected to treat everyone with utmost courtesy and respect, and to provide excellent customer service.
Lifeguards are responsible for reporting to work in a timely manner and being properly stationed and equipped to protect and serve those customers using municipal aquatic facilities. They must assist in the opening, routine maintenance, closing of facilities, complete reports, correspondences, issue and receive equipment and supplies.
EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor activities at the pool and surrounding areas to prevent accidents.
- Maintain order in the pool and adjoining areas.
- Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards, enforce and adhere to facility rules and regulations.
- Perform rescues, extrications, first-aid, CPR/AED as required.
- Demonstrate regular and timely attendance, report to work free from the effects of illegal substances or alcohol, and not be impaired due to prescription medications.
- Respond quickly, intelligently, decisively and in accordance with established emergency and accident management procedures.
- Maintain excellent physical condition and attend all required staff meetings and in‑service training sessions.
- Be properly stationed and equipped during lifeguarding rotations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, 16 preferred. Lifeguarding and customer service experience preferred.
Certifications- Approved Governing Body Current Lifeguard and Professional Rescuer Certification (American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates, or other nationally recognized certification program).
Applicants must possess excellent human relations skills and sound verbal & written communication skills. Excellent swimming skills and a basic understanding of all related pool operations and maintenance are required. Lifeguard certification is mandatory.

Job duties are performed outdoors. Position requires ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods, use full extremities and be able to transport themselves and move about the buildings and grounds. Requires good eyesight, hearing and speech. Requires ability to climb, balance, lift and carry loads up to 100 lbs and work outdoors in all types of weather. Employees may be exposed to seasonal temperatures, sun, wet, humid conditions, blood‑borne pathogens,body fluids, toxic & caustic chemicals.
Noise levels can be moderately loud on occasion.
In order to be hired, applicants must pass a background check, a drug screen, physical exam, and a reference check.
