Job Summary:
The Driver Development Instructor (DDI) delivers structured, hands-on instruction, professional coaching, and objective performance evaluations for newly licensed Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders preparing to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) with cargo tanks and ISO tanks. The DDI is accountable for developing safe, consistent, and defensible driving practices that meet Quality Carriers’ operating standards and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
This is a safety-critical instructional role. The DDI must demonstrate exemplary professional conduct, exercise sound judgment, intervene immediately when unsafe conditions arise, and provide accurate, timely documentation of trainee progress and readiness.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instructional Planning, Coaching, and Evaluation
- Deliver standardized, progressive instruction using approved Quality Carriers curriculum, training materials, and performance criteria.
- Demonstrate each critical task, supervise practical application, and verify trainee understanding through observation and repeatable performance assessments.
- Provide specific, timely, respectful coaching; identify unsafe habits, knowledge gaps, and performance deficiencies; and develop targeted remedial training recommendations.
- Maintain complete, factual, and timely training records, including skills demonstrated, deficiencies observed, corrective instruction, reassessments, and recommendations regarding readiness.
- Escalate persistent deficiencies, unsafe conduct, or training concerns through designated Training and Safety leadership channels; do not represent an unqualified trainee as ready for independent operation.
- Promote professionalism, personal accountability, effective communication, situational awareness, and compliance with company policies throughout every training activity.
- Behind-the-Wheel and Highway Operations
- Provide direct, supervised behind-the-wheel instruction in approved CMV and cargo/ISO tank combinations, progressing from basic vehicle handling to complex traffic environments.
- Develop proficiency in steering, acceleration, braking, lane positioning, turning, backing as applicable, merging, passing, highway entry and exit, and intersection navigation.
- Teach defensive driving, visual scanning, hazard anticipation, following distance, speed and space management, and appropriate responses to changing traffic conditions.
- Reinforce safe operation through curves, grades, construction zones, railroad crossings, congested areas, and adverse weather or reduced-visibility conditions.
- Emphasize tank-specific dynamics, including elevated center of gravity, liquid surge, weight transfer, rollover exposure, extended stopping distances, and the consequences of abrupt steering or braking.
- Coach sound route judgment, safe stopping and parking practices, awareness of clearance and turning limitations, and protection of the public and surrounding property.
- Safety, Compliance, and Intervention
- Teach and emphasize prompt reporting of events…
