Building a sustainable tomorrow BAM is seeking an experienced Project Health & Safety Manager to lead the HSW function on the Trans Pennine Route Upgrade (TRU), one of the UK's largest rail infrastructure programmes. This is a key leadership role focused on creating a strong safety culture where everyone goes home safe every day. Working closely with the Project Director, Senior Leadership Team and operational teams, you will lead a team of HSW professionals, driving effective risk management, continual improvement and best practice across the project.

You will play a central role in ensuring the safe, sustainable and successful delivery of this major rail enhancement programme. As part of the project leadership team, you will build strong relationships with clients, partners, contractors, designers and supply chain organisations, promoting a collaborative approach to health, safety and wellbeing. You will also contribute to BAM's wider HSW community, sharing learning, supporting strategic initiatives and helping to raise standards across the business.

Making Possible As Project Health & Safety Manager, you'll be responsible for:
Lead the Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) function across the TRU programme, providing independent and proactive safety leadership. Facilitate design risk reviews, Safety by Design workshops and pre-construction planning to eliminate risks vide specialist HSW input into tenders, delivery strategies and early contractor involvement activities. Ensure construction phase plans, logistics, temporary works and sequencing arrangements effectively manage risk. Advise project leaders on statutory compliance, CDM duties, Principal Contractor obligations and risk controls.

Embed HSW requirements, lifecycle risks and industry best practice throughout planning and design. Support supply chain selection, onboarding and assurance to ensure compliance with project standards. Implement and continuously improve BAM's HSW strategy, management systems and assurance processes. Lead, coach and develop a high-performing team of HSW professionals. Promote workforce engagement, visible leadership and a strong safety culture across the project.

Lead incident investigations, ensuring lessons learned drive sustainable improvements. Develop practical safe systems of work and risk controls that support efficient project delivery. Monitor, analyse and report HSW performance, trends and improvement actions to support informed decision-making. Build strong relationships with clients, alliance partners, contractors, regulators and other stakeholders. Bring significant major project HSW experience, strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation/CDM, leadership capability, and a NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6 or equivalent (rail experience desirable).

What do you bring to the role? Significant experience leading health, safety and wellbeing within major construction, infrastructure or civil engineering projects. Experience operating within Principal Contractor organisations and managing health and safety within complex, high-risk environments. Experience working within rail, infrastructure, transportation or other highly regulated industries. Ability to implement BAM's HSW strategy whilst developing project-specific initiatives that address local risks and operational needs.

Strong leadership, coaching and influencing skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all organisational levels. Proven experience influencing senior operational leaders, project leadership teams and key stakeholders to drive positive HSW outcomes. Proven experience working collaboratively with clients, supply chain partners, alliance organisations, regulators and other external stakeholders. Strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation, CDM requirements and industry best practice.

Experience implementing HSW management systems, assurance programmes and continuous improvement initiatives. Ability to lead significant incident investigations and translate learning into meaningful organisational improvement. Commercially aware and capable of balancing operational delivery with effective risk management. Proven experience leading and developing HSW teams. NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6 in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent qualification. Membership of IOSH, with Chartered status or progression towards Chartered status desirable.

Rail industry experience desirable.
