Job overview

The post holder will be expected to provide education and training to both health care professionals and patient groups. Teaching best practice based on current, credible, evidence-based learning. The post holder will develop and deliver education and training packages concerning Diabetes, Obesity, Safe prescribing and monitoring of GLP-1 therapies for both Primary and Secondary Care. In addition, the post holder will work with the Diabetes MDT, Bariatric MDT and Surgical MDT providing safe, evidence-based patient education, that promotes and supports personalised management plans and treatment.

The educator will also plan and monitor the development needs for the staff within the appraisal framework; this will improve staff moral and help to reduce staff sickness and turnover. The educator will also ensure that all new DSN’s (Diabetes Specialist Nurses) receive an appropriate induction programme upon commencement of employment within the team and monitors and supervise their progress.

The post holder will be expected to measure outcomes through data collection, audit and patient feedback and will be expected to attend regular diabetes obesity training.

Main duties of the job
  • Work alongside Diabetes Specialist Nurse, as part of the team to deliver the nursing service for patients with diabetes and improve staff competence.
  • The Diabetes-Obesity Nurse Educator will be expected to attend regular diabetes-obesity training and updates.
  • Demonstrate highly specialist knowledge and skills in the specialty of diabetes.
  • Have a primary clinical responsibility for patients with diabetes.
  • To be the primary link in the coordinating of patients with diabetes between hospital services including surgery, medicine, paediatrics and community services.
  • Responsible for planning mandatory training and keeping accurate records.
  • The Diabetes-Obesity nurse educator will develop and deliver education and training packages concerning Diabetes, Obesity, Safe prescribing and monitoring of Glp-1 therapies
  • The Diabetes-Obesity Nurse Educator will link with CHFT clinical educators, providing training to CHFT nursing staff and new starters.
  • Produce a competency document, responsible for assessing competency, training, and sign off, once the HCP feels proficient and confident.
