Job Overview
Fairview Health Services is hiring a Full‑Time Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) for its Northeast Clinic Laboratories (1.0 FTE, 80 hours per 2‑week pay period). The primary site is M Health Fairview Clinic – Hugo with a rotating weekend shift at an urgent‑care site, and opportunities to cross‑train at additional clinics (Vadnais Heights, Blaine, Stillwater). Shifts are 8 hours: primarily the closing shift 9:30 am‑6:00 pm Monday–Thursday and 9:00 am‑5:30 pm Friday, with a weekend day scheduled every 5–6 weeks.
Staff traveling between sites receive mileage reimbursement and an additional $3/hour float pay. The MLT performs waived or moderate complexity testing, utilizes standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintains quality control, and works independently under general supervision.
- Follow established guidelines to obtain specimens and perform waived, moderate, or high complexity testing and report results.
- Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique per SOP.
- Verify patient identity and specimen integrity before testing.
- Determine priority of specimen testing and procurement according to guidelines.
- Perform a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic testing, including hematology, coagulation, microbiology, serology, immunology, chemistry, special chemistry, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and EKG.
- Operate laboratory instrumentation and information systems per procedure.
- Document maintenance procedures and maintain adequate supplies.
- Recognize problems, seek assistance, and consult supervisors when needed.
- Initiate proper safety or emergency responses.
- Evaluate testing results for accuracy, determine normal parameters, and take corrective actions when necessary.
- Communicate abnormal and critical results to caregivers and resolve in congruent results.
- Contribute to laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Compliance programs by documenting deviations, reagent checks, and QC trends.
- Mentor new employees and students in testing methodology and instrumentation.
- Report progress, problems, and training completion to supervisors.
- Associate or higher degree in a related laboratory field (or equivalent) meeting CLIA’88 moderate complexity personnel requirements.
- Diploma with field of study listed or transcript; or 60 semester hours with 6 in biology and 6 in chemistry.
- Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory training course (50 weeks) is acceptable.
- Eligibility for or possession of a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification.
- ASCP, ASCPi, AMT, or AAB – MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) certification within 1 year.
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or Red Cross) within 90 days.
