About the programme

The Department of Economics at Royal Holloway, University of London is a centre of research and teaching excellence. Over 98% of our economics and econometrics research was rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in the most recent UK-wide research assessment (REF
2021).

The department’s PhD programme is small and offers a stimulating research environment with opportunities for advanced economics training in the first year. During the four years of the programme, students engage in independent research work that produces an original contribution to the field of economics.

The department has a good placement record for PhD students. Our graduates are successful in getting jobs in academia, research organisations, governments, international bodies, and the private sector. Recent placements include London School of Economics, Bristol University, University of Stirling, Max Planck Institute (Bonn, Germany), European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, National Institute of Economic Research, and Institute for Employment Studies.

We offer full-time (4 years) and part-time (8 years) PhD programmes.

Applicants should have an MSc in Economics or a related field demonstrating good quantitative skills. Alternatively, students without an MSc can apply to our combined MSc and PhD programmes. Applicants should also have a viable research project supported by a potential supervisor. This cannot be arranged at the last minute. Applicants are advised to consult the department’s research centres when looking for potential supervisors.

Royal Holloway University of London is a partner institution of South-East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc), a partnership of six leading UK universities funded by the Economic Social Research Council (ESRC). SEDarc provides student-led scholarships each year on a competitive basis. A good application for SEDarc requires evidence of good quantitative skills in their previous qualifications as well as a viable research proposal supported by a potential supervisor.

Details on how to apply for this funding will be placed on the university's SEDarc page in the autumn. The Department of Economics’ Final date to receive applications is 12noon Friday December 11th.

How to apply
