Role Overview
As the nurse practitioner within the defined sphere of practice the post holder will undertake a range of duties to ensure the effective delivery of care, including undertaking specialist procedures and providing specialist advice and ongoing support to the client group. The post holder is responsible for initiating treatments for patients against agreed protocols and guidelines, in the absence of a medical practitioner.
Key Responsibilities- Actively support patients and their families, communicating difficult and complex information using a variety of methods to ensure effective understanding, including overcoming language barriers and ensuring that patients have an adequate understanding in order to consent for treatments/surgery.
- Have an in‑depth understanding of ophthalmic anatomy and physiology, ophthalmic conditions, their treatments and the equipment used, and regularly convey this understanding to medical and nursing staff and patients and carers on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Assess patients attending nurse‑led clinics and initiate treatments based on presenting factors using guidelines for practice.
- Manage and prioritise own workload against the needs of patients and service requirements.
- Undertake a range of highly developed physical skills to include performing intravitreal injections.
- Provide direct specialist care to a defined group of ophthalmic patients.
