Band 6 Ect​/Neuromodulation Nurse

Job summary

The Band 6 ECT/rTMS Nurse is a senior post. The postholder will be responsible for delivering safe, effective, and compassionate neuromodulation treatments, including Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). The postholder will lead daily clinical operations, undertake specialist assessments, deliver treatments in line with national standards, and ensure high-quality patient care throughout the treatment pathway. The role includes clinical leadership, supervision of junior staff, coordination of patient pathways, and active involvement in service development, audit, governance, and accreditation processes.

• Assess patients pre-treatment including physical health checks, mental state, risk assessment, and treatment suitability.
• Provide specialist nursing care during ECT or rTMS sessions, ensuring safety, comfort, and adherence to clinical protocols.
• Ensure compliance with national guidelines, for ECTAS (ECT Accreditation Service) and NICE guidance.
• Contribute to audits, quality improvement, and service accreditation processes.
• Manage patient pathways, including referrals, scheduling, follow-up appointments, and communication with community teams.
• Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to Band 5 nurses, HCAs, and students
• Deliver training to staff on ECT/rTMS procedures, safety, and patient care.
• Work closely with:
  Consultant psychiatrists, Anaesthetists (ECT), other mental health teams
• Communicate treatment progress, risks, and outcomes to the wider MDT/ referring team.
• Lead on incident reporting, investigation, and learning.
• Ensure infection control compliance within the treatment suite.
• Participate in clinical governance meetings, audits, and service reviews.
• Maintain safeguarding awareness, escalating concerns appropriately.
• Provide psychoeducation about ECT/rTMS, addressing concerns and reducing stigma, and offer emotional support, especially for anxious or vulnerable patients.
• Support informed consent, ensuring patients understand risks, benefits, and alternatives

Band 6 nurses work closely with the people who use our services, families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Band 6 nurses are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

• Support the running of the ECT service based on safe, good practice. Role involves front of house clerking in patients, supporting patient in recovery post treatment, covering for Lead nurse in assisting administration of treatment in absence.
• Coordinate ECT clinics for inpatients and outpatients across
• Facilitate students learning experience for ECT which will include Nursing and Medical students and students from other health related professions. Through Observation of ECT and Teaching Sessions about ECT
• Organize training of qualified staff in running the ECT clinic to cover Absence of the postholder
• Responsible for collating statistics on use of ECT at Northwick Park which is required by the Trust
• Administer rTMS using pre-defined protocols
• Be actively involved in promoting the activities of the neuromodulation service
