Additive Manufacturing Process Engineer II

We are looking for a Process Engineer II for our Huntersville, NC facility.

The Process Engineer II is a key position in the Process Engineering team responsible for the definition and standardization of controlled systems/processes for all manufacturing steps across the full value stream within the Oerlikon AM Huntersville facility. This position has a focus on material characterization and microstructural analysis with deep understanding of the impact of heat treatment.

This role is responsible for developing robust cost-effective systems and processes that balance the requirements of both customers and industry standards. These systems/processes must also allow the business to fulfill its operational excellence metrics and strive towards the industrialization of AM. This role is responsible for working closely with the Quality team to release processes via the internal quality management system (QMS).

Following release, the process engineer II role works together with the product engineering team to ensure parts are manufactured in line with best practices and procedures.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Standardize, & maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) & Work Instructions (WI) for all manufacturing processes within the facility.
  • Define & maintain Oerlikon AM internal powder, process, and material specifications for the standard Oerlikon manufacturing portfolio.
  • Develop new standardized process offerings when required by the business.
  • Determine and assess Oerlikon AM internal process capabilities (Cpk) for the standard manufacturing portfolio.
  • Organize & maintain data collection systems to establish real time SPC for key manufacturing processes.
  • Investigate how new technologies can apply to Oerlikon AM standard portfolio or improve operational excellence as part of Oerlikon AM’s technology strategy.
  • Ensure all new equipment is installed, commissioned, & released to operations in line with internal SOP’s.
  • Define & standardize external supplier documentation and work with procurement to evaluate supplier capabilities.
  • Provide technical process/manufacturing input for quoting.
  • Manage continuous improvement activities for all manufacturing processes.
  • Provide training to both Product Engineering & Operations for standardized processes.
  • Determine internal preventative maintenance programs for all manufacturing processes and manage maintenance schedules.
  • Define & implement standardized processes and process controls that map to customer requirements and improve business metrics (ex: reduced scrap, reduced time to market, etc.).
  • Define & maintain data collection systems for key processes to predict process failures and highlight areas of improvement to improve process cost, lead times, and equipment downtime.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Level 1 engineers.
  • Work together with Product Engineering, Quality, & Operations team to achieve yearly business goals.
Your Profile:
  • Minimum 4 year bachelor's degree in Engineering. Preferred fields of Engineering include Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, System Design, or Materials.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in engineering within a regulated industry. Preferred experience in the development and qualification of new materials and heat treatment processes.
  • In compliance with U.S. Government technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), candidates must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
  • Basic knowledge of AM, machining, heat treatment, EDM, cleaning, and finishing (grit blast, tumbling, abrasive flow or chemical machining, manual support removal), part marking, assembly methods, and inspection techniques (vision systems, CMM, gaging).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, including an understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Ability to effectively use problem-solving tools such as Pareto Charts, SPC methodologies, cause and effect diagrams as well as 8D or similar problem solving experience.
