About the role

We're looking for a Project Engineer to join our Water Recycling Operations team, leading the delivery of sludge-focused improvement projects across our operational sites.

This is an exciting opportunity to drive engineering and process improvements that enhance sludge thickening and dewatering performance, improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, strengthen environmental compliance, and increase resilience across our sludge treatment processes.

Working closely with operational teams, technical specialists, and delivery partners, you'll identify opportunities for improvement, develop innovative solutions, and ensure successful implementation of projects that deliver measurable business benefits. You'll play a key role in embedding sustainable improvements into business-as-usual operations while supporting Anglian Water's commitment to environmental excellence and operational performance.

What will you be doing?
  • Leading investigations into underperforming sludge thickening and dewatering assets to identify root causes and improvement opportunities
  • Driving improvements in upstream sludge management to optimise downstream dewatering performance
  • Leading the delivery of a portfolio of sludge improvement projects from concept through to implementation and handover
  • Supporting the commissioning and operational readiness of new sludge assets and ensuring expected performance outcomes are achieved
  • Monitoring project delivery against performance, cost, and timeline targets
  • Establishing performance monitoring frameworks and KPIs to sustain improvements over the long term
What does it take to be successful?
  • A full UK driving licence
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of wastewater systems and processes
  • Strong knowledge of sludge treatment processes and the end-to-end sludge lifecycle
  • Experience working within a regulated operational environment
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements within operational settings
  • Experience operating under CDM principles

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement practical solutions
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and operational teams
  • A proactive and continuous improvement mindset, with the ability to lead change and embed new ways of working
