Summary

General labor and semi‑skilled building maintenance work. Assists senior‑level maintenance specialists in the performance of skilled maintenance work in the various construction and mechanical systems trades.

Distinguishing Career Features

Maintenance Specialist I is the first‑level position requiring generalized experience in building maintenance, grounds, or advanced custodial work. Advancement to Maintenance Specialist II is possible with specialized training in an advanced trade combined with additional experience at the journey level.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform servicing and maintenance to fixtures, including plumbing adjustments and cleaning water jets.
  • Paint, varnish, and finish walls, doors, and other surfaces, preparing and finishing surfaces by scraping, using commercial paint removers, and filling cracks.
  • Install, fabricate, assemble, and repair doors, walls, signs, desks, counters, shelves, and related structures, assisting in construction and remodel of temporary and permanent buildings.
  • Assemble, adjust, and repair furniture and move furniture and stage platforms for special events.
  • Repair, maintain, and conduct maintenance on walkways, classroom equipment, and air‑conditioning and heating systems, changing filters and greasing motors and compressors.
  • Assist in skilled trades areas of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other crafts as assigned.
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance of light equipment, including light tractors, skip loaders, forklifts, and other labor‑saving devices.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of roofs, baseboards, furniture, cabinets, shelving, bookcases, and bulletin boards.
  • Install, repair, and maintain floor tile, acoustical tile, linoleum, and carpet.
  • Perform routine servicing on air‑conditioning and heating systems, changing filters and greasing and oiling bearings.
  • Assist IT department with cable pulling when requested.
  • Deliver special project machines to the campuses.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
  • Knowledge and Skills
    • Working knowledge of building, grounds, or equipment maintenance sufficient to perform routine maintenance and repair tasks.
    • Knowledge of the use, maintenance, and repair of the various tools and equipment used in building maintenance and repair work.
    • Understanding of safety rules and regulations.
    • Math skills sufficient to record measurements and calculate portions and quantities.
    • English language skills to document work assignment details.
    • Human relations skills to exhibit positive customer service and work as a contributing member of a team.
