Learn to become a nonprofit accountant

Discover a rewarding accounting career that supports mission‑driven organizations.

Where nonprofit accountants work

They can serve directly within a nonprofit’s finance department, consult for multiple clients at an accounting firm, or even operate their own advisory business.

What nonprofit accountants do
  • Prepare and reconcile financial statements (balance sheet, statement of activities, cash flow, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate and compliant donor, grant, and restricted fund records
  • Prepare grant and donor expenditure reports and supporting documentation
  • Develop and recommend budgets that advance the organization’s mission
  • Assist with tax filings, including Form 990, and provide general tax guidance
  • Communicate financial insights to leadership and advise on resource allocation
Requirements to become a nonprofit accountant

Education: A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration is typically required. A master’s degree (MS, MBA with accounting, MAcc, or MPAC) may enhance career prospects and satisfy CPA education requirements.

Licensure and certification: A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is not mandatory but can be beneficial. Requirements vary by state, usually 150 credit hours and passing the CPA exam.

Practical experience—through internships, entry‑level accounting roles, or volunteer work with nonprofits—provides hands‑on exposure to grant reporting and fund accounting.

How much do nonprofit accountants make?

Median annual salary for accountants and auditors in the U.S. is $81,680, though nonprofit figures vary by location, experience, and employer type.
