Locate Technician

Job Description

Locate Technicians are responsible for accurately locating underground facilities including telephone communication lines, electric power lines, cable television lines, gas lines, fiber optic lines, water lines, and sewer lines. This position is a key component to ensure that the area is complying with client and state requirements. Service duties include observing, locating, marking, and documenting underground and exposed utility locations. Understanding and using multiple location methods is required.

The locating technician will be dispatched to locate and verify for the utility customer. Technicians can work independently or in a team environment under an assigned supervisor, requiring focus, skill, and the use of machinery and/or tools.

• Accurately locate underground facilities using transmitters and hooking to buried facilities.
• Work and walk over all types of terrain and construction zones, residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all weather conditions.
• Interpret job order tickets, blueprints, and maps to efficiently route and perform duties.
• Perform locates and emergency/on‑call locates during regular, overtime, and holiday hours as necessary.
• Work in a timely, professional and efficient manner while communicating with customers, co‑employees, and third parties.
• Communicate with the management team, contractor, and utility customer to ensure a damage‑free environment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of technology and tools needed.
• Work with others in a supervised team environment.

• High School Diploma or equivalency (GED).
• State issued driver’s license.
• Problem‑solving ability.
• Ability to read, interpret, and decipher multiple types of prints.
• Experience with vacuum truck A+ (preferred).
• Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
• Ability to walk/stand for multiple hours a day.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Pass background screening (no violations within the last 5 years).
• Pass DOT drug test.
