Coordinator - Intramural Sports & Student Development Overview

The CENTERS team is innovative, entrepreneurial, trail-blazing, and ambitious for both CENTERS and our clients.

Today, CENTERS provides management services for 14 clients.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Coordinator - Intramural Sports & Student Development is responsible for the administration of the intramural sport program. The coordinator will collaborate with campus partners and department teammates to plan, schedule, and administer this program. In addition, the coordinator will play a key role in cultivating a comprehensive student employment experience grounded in leadership development, critical thinking, professionalism, and collaboration.

This position works on-site at the Marshall Recreation Center client location. Located in the heart of Huntington, West Virginia, Marshall University has evolved from its origins as a teacher training institution in 1837 into a nationally recognized public research university, proudly serving as a cornerstone of academic excellence in the Appalachian region.

Essential Functions
  • Develop, schedule, and register participants for intramural programs
  • Train officiating mechanics and game, conflict & risk management skills
  • Develop and communicate intramural sport rules and program participation policies & procedures
  • Supervise intramural sport contests and provide staff with on-site evaluations
  • Manage and inventory intramural sport equipment and supplies
  • Evaluate performance and program effectiveness;
    Ensure programs stay in line with all the current trends and rules
  • Responsible for the operating, preparation, forecasting and monitoring of income and expense budgets as it relates to program area
  • Prepare regular written communication such as monthly and annual reports, financial and participation reports and equipment inventory reports
Staff Supervision
  • Hire, manage, train and supervise intramural officials, supervisors
  • Responsible for approving timecards and preparing necessary documents/reports in preparation for payroll
Site-Specific Responsibilities
  • Lead the comprehensive employee orientation, introduce departmental expectations, and promote a culture of professionalism and inclusion
  • Coordinate employee recognition programs; responsible for planning and executing the end of the year staff recognition
  • Advise the student employee advisory committee
  • Plan and coordinate student staff recruitment events, including job fairs, information sessions, and outreach campaigns, to attract a diverse and qualified pool of applicants
  • Oversee structured recognition programs that tie back to core values and performance benchmarks
  • Develop and facilitate team-building events and staff appreciation initiatives
Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or 4 or more years of work experience required
  • Experience working in higher education, recreation, or sports
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and organizing intramurals
  • Officiating experience preferred
  • Experience in student employee training, mentorship, or leadership development

Physical Demands
  • Sitting at desk or table for at least 60% of the work day
  • Must be able to traverse throughout buildings, sports fields, and campus. Regularly ascending/descending building levels and occasionally ladders or stools.
  • Must be able to lift, move and set up items weighing as much as 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with patrons, staff, stakeholders, etc.
