Position Summary

The Vice President of Foundations is a key member of the executive leadership team for the academic health system, Marshall Health Network (MHN), and is responsible for the strategic leadership, alignment, and oversight of all MHN-affiliated foundations. This individual is responsible for direct fundraising strategy, driving philanthropic initiatives, and ensuring coordination across all foundation entities within the network to maximize impact, donor engagement, and resource development in support of MHN’s mission of Advancing Health, Inspiring Hope and Serving You.

Specific

Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Alignment
  • Develop and implement a unified philanthropic vision across all MHN-affiliated foundations.
  • Align fundraising goals and activities with the strategic priorities of the network, including clinical care, research, education, and community health.
  • Serve as a thought partner to executive leadership on opportunities for transformational giving and capital campaigns.
  • Maintain an excellent level of professional staff through recruitment and retention programs.
  • Foster a collaborative, ethical, and high-performing environment through role modeling, professional development, and team support.
  • Oversee the design and execution of major gift strategies, annual giving, planned giving, capital campaigns, and grant initiatives.
  • Build and steward relationships with individual donors, corporations, foundations, and community partners.
  • Partner with physicians, academic leaders, and executive stakeholders to cultivate prospective donors and articulate compelling cases for support.
  • Engage and support Foundation Board committees, facilitating meetings and fostering their growth and involvement.
  • Collaborate with development staff, finance teams, business relations, and community stakeholders to advance philanthropic priorities.
Foundation Governance & Operations
  • Provide executive leadership to the boards of MHN-affiliated foundations, working closely with board chairs to set strategic agendas, ensure fiduciary oversight, and support board development.
  • Ensure organizational structures, policies, and processes of MHN-affiliated foundations support alignment, accountability, and optimal performance on behalf of the Network.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and best practices related to fundraising, financial management, and donor stewardship.
  • Direct budgets, staffing, and operational processes for foundation offices to ensure efficiency and impact.
  • Collaborate with MHN’s marketing, communications, and government relations teams to promote philanthropic priorities and community impact.
  • Coordinate closely with hospitals, university, and community partners to advance shared goals and integrate philanthropy into broader network initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at community events, donor functions, and public engagements.
  • Communicate complex medical and funding concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility for appropriations, donor contributions, restricted and endowed funds.
  • Oversee donor database management, audits, and compliance requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate foundation financial performance; serve as primary agent in contracts and agreements.
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business, healthcare administration, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in fundraising, foundation management, or development within healthcare, higher education, or nonprofit sectors.
    • Proven record of soliciting and closing major, planned, and transformational gifts.
    • Expertise in metrics-driven fundraising, data analytics, and major gift programs.
    • Successful experience with capital, project-based, and comprehensive campaigns.
    • Significant experience managing professional staff and volunteer boards.
    • Proficiency in budgeting and fiscal management.
    • Exceptional leadership, relationship-building, and communication skills.
    • Deep understanding of the philanthropic landscape in Appalachia and rural communities.
  • Preferred:
    • Significant experience in healthcare or academic medicine philanthropy.
    • Advanced degree or continuing education in fundraising or nonprofit management.
    • Professional fundraising certifications/designations (e.g., CFRE, ACFRE, FAHP, CSPG, CAP).
