Responsibilities
The principal objective of this position is to ensure that all patients requiring insurance pre‑certification for surgery, hospital admissions or other, are submitted to insurance in a timely manner for approval with all pertinent records and documentation. The Bariatric Insurance Coordinator will ensure that the patient has completed all program steps prior to submission and will proactively initiate appeals or peer‑to‑peer reviews when needed.
The coordinator will strive for 100% insurance coverage on all admissions, with both primary and secondary insurance when applicable, and will have the accounts ready to bill prior to or by the time of discharge. In addition, other objectives will include collecting and correlating bariatric program statistics and data on patient outcomes to promote Bariatric Program Standards and participation in patient, physician and staff education of insurance requirements for bariatric surgery.
This will require staying up to date on industry changes and CPT coding as it pertains to bariatric surgery coverage and all program and insurance requirements necessary to obtain coverage. The Bariatric Insurance Coordinator will work closely with the bariatric team, program manager, surgeon/s, and other providers, the OR scheduling department, as well as the patient for a collaborative team approach to program completion, insurance coverage/pre‑authorizations and surgery scheduling.
This will require an extremely organized approach and ability to effectively communicate with all named departments, groups, and individuals. Along with the bariatric team, the coordinator will also assist with periodic patient seminars, and/or patient support group meetings that will be outside of regular daytime business hours and will assist as needed with office duties as assigned.
