About This Role

The Stingray Bay Lifeguard is a part‑time position located at Stingray Bay. The lifeguard is responsible for the safety of the patrons at the pool by enforcing rules and responding to emergency situations.

Requirements
  • Must be 16 years of age and an excellent swimmer.
  • Must have lifeguard certification or ability to obtain Star Guard Lifeguard Certification before the season begins.
  • Successfully complete an in‑water skill test and a written test on skill and safety.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification or able to attain certification prior to opening day of Stingray Bay.
Essential Duties
  • Providing supervision of swimming pool patrons by enforcing rules and providing scanning of their zone (10/20 Rule) at all times.
  • Identify patrons in distress and respond with appropriate rescue techniques.
  • Perform first aid and assist with other emergency situations.
  • Attend required regular in‑service training as scheduled.
  • Begin and complete lifeguard rotations on time.
  • Be in proper uniform and appearance standards, including required sun protection.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of all pool zones and high‑risk areas.
  • Follow policy and safety procedures as stated in Aquatic Procedure Manual.
  • Assist with set up before opening the facility and assist with closing.
  • Follow safety guidelines as it pertains to safe rotation of stations observing facility rules such as no running and 3‑points of contact principles when ascending or descending from lifeguard chairs.
  • Report any unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding participant’s private information consistent with park district policy and legal requirements.
  • Interact with the general population, co‑workers, and park district staff in a positive manner.
Marginal Functions
  • Find a substitute and sub when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Environmental Considerations
  • Employee may be exposed to chemicals (i.e., chlorine and cleaning materials).
  • Employee is exposed to outside weather conditions most of the time, including extreme heat and humidity, cold and rain. Some indoor training is required.
  • Staff is required to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, shirt and a hat, drink plenty of fluids.
Essential Mental/Physical Requirements
  • While performing this job, the employee is required to speak and listen, stand, walk, use hands and arms, sit, and stoop or kneel, bend and lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements include distance, color vision, peripheral and depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations and has the responsibility for the safety of the general public in the pool and the pool areas. Lifeguards will take a vision test at the beginning of the season and be provided with any remediation needs.
  • Must be able to think and respond quickly and accurately in all situations.
  • Worker must be able to follow supervisor direction with safe follow through and exercise good judgment and safety awareness.
Safety and Facility Requirements
  • Assure a safe and hazard free environment by inspecting and taking the necessary action to correct and safeguard against potential problems and/or accidents.
  • Must comply with all safety policies and procedures now in effect or adopted in the future.
  • Employee must be able to follow directions with safe follow through and exercises good judgment and safety awareness.
  • Employee will use all required PPE.
  • All unsafe conditions are to be reported to your supervisor immediately.
