Weapons Systems Engineer Job Description
Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services Division is seeking a weapon systems engineer to oversee the design, development and production of advanced weapon systems that will operate in subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic and exo‑atmospheric conditions. Ideal applicants have a strong background in weapon system development, specifically in integrated flight simulations, high‑fidelity and real‑time modeling, autopilot design, sensor fusion and guidance & control.
The scope of the assignment ranges from early concept design to robust embedded software on production weapon systems. Applicants will contribute to all elements of system development including requirements generation, software implementation, verification and validation, and documentation. The position may require up to 25 % travel to support program events and launch operations.
- Implement an integrated weapon system simulation architecture to model behavior from pre‑launch to end‑game with hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HWIL) modularity.
- Design guidance and control algorithms for new and existing aerospace control systems.
- Implement algorithms in flight software using C++.
- Develop simulations for stability and robustness analysis.
- Create physics‑based models of flight systems for use in trajectory simulations.
- Evaluate solutions for mission requirement compliance.
- Generate test plans, test procedures and test reports.
- Design and conduct hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HWIL) testing of flight components.
- Participate in full system integration tests and vehicle launch activities.
- Perform post‑flight analysis and implement lessons learned.
- Classical control theory and stability analysis.
- Experience with implementation of control algorithms on embedded systems.
- Experience with closed‑loop guidance using navigation instruments, mid‑course/terminal sensors and proximity/height‑of‑burst sensors.
- High fidelity modeling and simulation architectures.
- Realtime simulations to support hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.
- Integrated flight simulations to support total system performance quantification.
- Monte‑Carlo analysis plans and execution.
- Proficient in C/C++, Python, and MATLAB.
- Ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance.
- PhD in Aerospace, Electrical, or Computer Engineering with a focus in controls, autopilot design and/or guidance.
- 15+ years relevant professional experience.
Huntsville, AL preferred.
