Mechanical Engineer II

Huntsville, AL

Global Technical Systems (GTS) provides innovative, cost‑effective, high‑tech engineering products and services for defense, homeland security, and other critical government interests. Our Munitions Department in Huntsville seeks a Mechanical Engineer II to contribute to the conceptualization, design, development, and testing of advanced weapons systems.

General Description

Participates in the conceptualization, design, development, and testing of new, innovative products. Provides technical support and original design inputs for complex mechanical systems within weapons, warheads, and fuse development. Applies system, hardware, and software knowledge to new products from concept through production and to redesign existing systems. Performs analyses, trade studies, and technical input to specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Performs design and engineering activities for weapons, warheads, and fuse development.
  • Works with team members—including other engineering disciplines and program management—to transfer ideas into core product processes, facilitate design implementation, and improve existing products.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, contributes to cross‑functional teams, reports status to management, and maintains project design schedules.
  • Provides original design inputs for complex mechanical engineering projects.
  • Considers approaches and techniques for rapid prototyping and full‑scale production development and testing.
  • Conducts technical research and investigations to explore alternative solutions, providing justification and support to senior staff.
  • Prepares requirements documents and detailed specifications to define and allocate requirements to systems and components.
  • Provides technical consultation to the engineering team.
  • Reviews drawings and technical papers for compliance with project/program requirements.
  • Evaluates vendor capabilities for delivering the required level of performance of products and/or services.
  • Interacts with customers, vendors, engineers, production personnel, and program management to complete projects successfully.
Qualifications

Work Experience Requirements: 3–7 years relevant engineering experience in a mechanical engineering discipline.

Educational Requirements: BS/BA in Engineering or Engineering Science.

Working Conditions: Typically performed in an office with occasional outdoor environment. Office work includes handling light materials and product integration/assembly; outdoor work involves lifting up to 50 lbs and proximity to explosives.

Essential Skills/Experience
  • Proficiency using Computer‑Aided Design tools (Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD) and Finite Element Analysis software (Nastran, ANSYS, etc.).
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering in the relevant area of expertise and ability to support related disciplines.
  • Ability to work independently and in highly collaborative teams.
  • Ability to accurately articulate concepts, theories, and system design attributes to technical team members.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical information.
  • Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience working with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (e.g., Costpoint).
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance.
  • All candidates must pass a drug test.
Beneficial Skills/Experience
  • Experience with government programs and defense systems.
  • Aerospace/Munitions development experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
