Mechanical Engineer III – Global Technical Systems (GTS)
Location:
Huntsville, AL
GTS provides innovative, cost‑effective high‑tech engineering products and services for defense, homeland security, and other critical government interests. The Munitions Department in Huntsville is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to participate in the conceptualization, design, development, and testing of new mechanical systems for weapons, warheads, and fuzes.
Key Responsibilities- Design and engineering activities for weapons, warheads, and fuze development.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and program management to transfer ideas into core product processes, implement design ideas, and improve existing products.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, contribute to cross‑functional teams, and report project status to management.
- Provide original design inputs for complex mechanical engineering projects.
- Consider rapid prototyping and full‑scale development and test approaches.
- Conduct technical research and investigations, justify proposed solutions to senior staff.
- Prepare requirements documents and detailed specifications to define and allocate system and component requirements.
- Provide technical consultation to the engineering team and review drawings and technical papers for compliance.
- Evaluate vendor capabilities and interact with customers, vendors, engineers, production personnel, and program management.
- 8–10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience in a mechanical engineering discipline.
- BS/BA in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering‑Science.
- Proficiency using CAD tools such as Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD and FEA software such as Nastran, ANSYS, or other DoD codes.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and ability to support related disciplines.
- Ability to work independently and in highly collaborative teams.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate concepts and present technical information.
- Strong organizational and multi‑priority management skills.
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Costpoint).
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance.
- Must be able to pass a drug test.
- Experience with government programs and defense systems, aerospace/munitions development, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Typical office work with occasional outdoor environment.
- Desk work and collaborative spaces, light material handling and product assembly.
- Outdoor duties requiring ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds, proximity to explosives, and all seasons.
