The Industrial Safety/ Test Engineer will support the space program located at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama
.
The selected candidate will be responsible for performing and reviewing Safety Assessments, along with reviewing Procedures and Facility Drawings for testing programs and operations around MSFC.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Presentation
:
Identify, analyze, classify (severity & likelihood), and formally present hazards and risks associated with customer testing programs and hazardous operations to customer directorate leadership, risk-accepting authorities, and Test Readiness Reviews (TRR) boards. - Safety Requirements Compliance & Documentation Review
:
Perform safety engineering evaluations to ensure compliance with industry consensus codes and Government safety program requirements for preliminary engineering studies, feasibility studies, building, facility and equipment drawings and specifications - Trade Studies & Design/Operations Safety Input
:
Actively participate in trade studies for design, development, operations, and testing events on both in-house and contracted projects to ensure safety requirements are met, risks are identified/characterized, and appropriate mitigations are implemented. - Explosives Siting Analysis
:
Perform quantity distance calculations for explosives sighting issues using NASA-STD-8719.12, Safety Standard for Explosives, Propellants, and Pyrotechnics. - Procedure & Operational Safety Review
:
Review test, checkout, and operating procedures for compliance with approved safety controls and verification requirements. - Tracking, Reporting & Deliverables
:
Present safety status during weekly meetings, and other program reviews; provide required SMASS contract deliverables (bi-weekly/monthly activity reports). - Perform additional system safety engineering tasks as assigned in support of the Industrial Safety Branch and overall program safety posture.

- Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering
, or a related field. - Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience.
- In lieu of degree: Candidates with 9+ years of recent and related work experience will be considered.
- Must possess demonstrable experience in the performance of safety hazard assessments and documenting results (e.g., development of Hazard Analyses and Operational Hazard Analyses (OHA) including defining hazard causes, controls, and methods of verification/validation).
- Able to work in a matrix-oriented organization with minimum to no supervision.
- Skilled in working with both contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner.
- Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired.
- Experience in assessing preliminary engineering studies, feasibility studies, building/equipment specifications.
- Knowledge of government safety programs, hazardous operations readiness reviews (e.g., MWI 8715.17).
- Familiarity with documenting evaluations, inspections, and non-compliances in systems like Safe Suite or other government-designated databases.
- Ability to participate effectively in multidisciplinary safety reviews (e.g., ORR, SRT, TRR) and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.
- This position is located onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off; some travel may be required.
- Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.
