The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an 11‑bed unit caring for critically ill children at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. The PICU is staffed by RNs, NPs, and a Pediatric Intensivist, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide acute care to children 0‑18 years old. Our educational program includes monthly in‑services from physicians.

• Provide care for children and adolescents 0‑18 years with life‑threatening or high‑acuity conditions requiring constant monitoring.
• Identify patient needs and priorities through detailed assessments of respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, orthopedic, endocrine, and neurologic dysfunction.
• Plan and deliver safe, age‑appropriate care under critical situations, including titration of drips, multiple technical procedures, and use of acute‑care equipment.
• Evaluate patient responses and progress toward expected outcomes.
• Accountable for patient outcomes during the assigned shift and strive to provide clinical and service excellence.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current Alabama licensure.
• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics or critical care (new graduates not accepted).

• BLS certification required before completion of orientation.
• PALS certification required within 6 months of hire.
