DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program offers unique research opportunities to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at the Marshall Space Flight Center. This postdoctoral-level research opportunity within the heliophysics program provides work with observational data from space-borne missions and ground-based telescopes, or for instrument development of solar UV and X‑ray observations. The primary advisor is Dr. Sabrina Savage. Other advisors include Dr.
David McKenzie, Dr. Alphonse Sterling, Dr. Amy Winebarger, and Dr. Ron Moore from the University of Alabama‑Huntsville. A background in solar physics is advantageous but not required.
Primary research themes include:
- Middle coronal imaging and analysis
- X‑ray spectroscopy
- Filament eruptions, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar flares
- Coronal heating
- Small‑scale chromospheric and transition region structures such as spicules, macro spicules, and coronal jets
- Signatures and tracers of magnetic reconnection in the corona
- Plasma flows in solar flares
Instrumental research areas focus on:
- Design, development, and testing of sub‑orbital and space‑based remote sensing systems, including UV and X‑ray telescopes
- Measurement of vector magnetic fields
- Development of optical systems and cameras, and scientific analysis of the acquired data
