Position: Software Engineer, Sr - GMD Weapons Systems (GWS)

Become a part of something IMPACT‑ful! Ground Missile Defense (GMD) is the heart of the Missile Defense System and a key element of our nation’s defense against ballistic missile attacks.

The GMD Weapon System (GWS) processes data from multiple sensors to identify and characterize the inbound ballistic missile threat, plans the best defensive solution, and launches the intercepting missiles to negate the threat.

The Work

The Software Engineer Sr responsibilities include software development and support of the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA’s) Ground‑Based Mid‑course Defense (GMD) program. You will be responsible for developing and implementing software updates that best meet changing customer needs for new and existing features, collaborating with team members, and working in a cross‑functional agile scrum team.

General activities
  • Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions with ingenuity and creativity.
  • Collaborates with other software and systems engineers to determine computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems with program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions.
  • Ensure software standards are met.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding and wide application of software development related technical principles, theories, and concepts. Show general knowledge of other related disciplines.
Essential Functions
  • Support advanced portions of the life cycle of software development to include requirements definition, integration, and deployment.
  • Prioritize and adjust tasks to accomplish project results with limited oversight and direction.
  • Apply 'systems thinking' to ensure developed products are scalable, maintainable, and meet end‑user needs.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with teammates and customer representatives.
  • The selected candidate should thrive in a fast‑paced work environment with high expectations, significantly diverse assignments, and collaborations across disciplines.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 4 Years with Masters; 2 Years with PhD
  • Must be able to acquire a DOD 8570 IAT Level II certification within 60 days from the start date (ex: Security + CE)
  • Experience developing object oriented software in C++, Java, Python
  • Experience with CI/CD best practices, automated builds and tests, quality gates, software quality, and CI tools and pipelines
  • Familiarity with security coding standard best practices, static and dynamic scanning tools, i.e., Sonar Qube, Coverity, etc.
  • Recent Experience working with cloud technologies and platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud
  • US Citizenship, with a active DoD Secret clearance
Desired Skills
  • Prior experience working on Missile Defense programs
  • Prior experience working using DOORS
  • Prior experience using Atlassian Tools
  • Familiar with Agile terminology and best practices
  • Prior experience as a Product Owner
  • Familiar with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Cameo
  • Familiar with automated software requirements testing and analysis
  • Must be able to support an in‑person, closed‑area work environment 100% of the time
