Duties Performed

Serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU‑COM) in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine.

The University is seeking qualified candidates to join SHSU‑COM as full‑time Clinical Faculty. The position reports to the Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine. The University is focused on improving the physician workforce in primary care and other specialties identified as a physician shortage in the State of Texas and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning and an osteopathic emphasis.

The Clinical Faculty member will be expected to act as a mentor, particularly for students wishing to practice in primary care fields or in rural/community‑based medicine. The clinical faculty members will assist the Chair in development of clinical content for systems courses and clerkships, participate in scholarship and research in the department, provide quality patient care and foster collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.

Members of the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine will be expected to participate in teaching in the systems courses, physical exam course, case‑based learning sessions, clinical clerkships, procedural skills training, OSCE’s and (where appropriate) Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine hands‑on training. Individuals should be comfortable working in pre‑clinical and clinical education, as well as evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods.

Where appropriate, the members of the department will participate in the SHSU faculty practice in the SHSU Physicians clinic. However, there may be opportunities for members of the clinical faculty to be granted part‑time contracts with SHSU in order to provide patient care with external clinical practices. Further, in some cases, consideration for full or part‑time faculty contracts may be considered for clinicians who are no longer practicing medicine.

This position is located in Conroe at the College of Osteopathic Medicine facility.

Educational Requirements
  • DO or MD degree from a College of Osteopathic or Allopathic Medicine with successful completion of residency training
  • Current AOA or ABMS board certification or board eligibility
  • Unrestricted license to practice in Texas (or eligibility to obtain one)

Preference will be given to primary care physicians with training and experience in osteopathic manipulative medicine, however physicians with any degree or specialty will be considered. If a successful candidate does not possess an active license to practice medicine in Texas, the position will commence once an unrestricted license is obtained.

Experience Required

This position requires clinical skills and well‑developed communication skills. A background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre‑clinical and clinical teaching. Those able to teach osteopathic manipulative medicine are preferred but not required. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training.

Other Requirements
  • Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems and reporting is preferred.
  • Other duties as assigned.
