Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy
Sam Houston State University invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor (9‑month appointment) in Physics and Astronomy, located on the Huntsville, TX campus.
Responsibilities- Instruct introductory and upper‑division courses in astronomy, utilizing active‑learning and the new “engaging spaces” classroom.
- Supervise undergraduate and graduate students, including advising and observatory project leadership.
- Conduct observational research in astronomy/astrophysics, leveraging the 27″ CDK‑700 telescope at the Dominey Observatory and the 27″ CDK‑700 system on the “Christmas Mountains” dark‑sky site.
- Lead grant applications and pursue external funding to support research and telescope time.
- Promote growth of the Minor in Astronomy and teach specialized courses for these students.
- Ph.D. in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related field (ABD acceptable if completed by start of employment).
- Demonstrated classroom teaching experience and a research program with a direct observational component.
- Experience in leading undergraduate research, observing projects, and working with large telescope facilities.
- Strong record of pursuing external funding and securing telescope time.
