Nature and Purpose of Position
The Learning Coach performs duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Coaching in the Academic Success Center. The Learning Coach will provide structured learning support and techniques to aid SHSU students in their learning process. This position will work independently and in team settings to promote academic success, student engagement, personal development, and meaningful connections with SHSU Students, Faculty, Staff, and resources.
Job Duties and Responsibilities- Provide one-on-one and group coaching with undergraduate students who seek to improve their academic journey.
- Assess situational and academic needs to promote and provide action‑oriented strategies for student‑clients.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of program assessment, resulting in evidence‑based improvements.
- Collect data, provide summary reports, and make referrals where needed to guide students in seeking appropriate campus support.
- Represent and support logistics of the Academic Success Center for initiatives including, but not limited to, Student Learning Orientations, Welcome Week, Classroom Visits, Accountability Groups, etc.
- Performs additional job‑related duties and responsibilities as requested.
- In‑person at the Academic Success Center in the Newton Gresham Library
- Maximum: 20 hours per week
- Some weekend and evening hours may be required.
After an appropriate initial training period, the Learning Coach will develop their skills through experiential learning, which includes:
- Conducting individual one‑on‑one appointments with SHSU Students.
- Conducting small group sessions with SHSU Students.
- Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and report activities conducted.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written and electronic documents.
- Ability to communicate orally, both in person, by telephone, and virtually/online.
- Ability to travel to meetings, other campuses and/or sites.
- Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to students and staff.
- Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation, and relationships with others.
- Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant.
- Ability to communicate via computer email.
