Assistant Professor of Art

Sam Houston State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Art (Graphic Design) position located in Huntsville, TX with an on-site work arrangement. The appointment is set to begin Fall 2027 and centers on teaching graphic design while engaging with print, interactive, and emerging design technologies, including AI-driven tools and new workflows.

In this faculty position, you will support a regionally competitive Graphic Design program through instruction, ongoing creative or scholarly work, and contributions to departmental, college, and university committees. The role also includes curriculum development that stays aligned with current industry standards, along with student mentoring focused on career preparation, internships, and professional development.

• Teach 5 courses per year on a 3/2 course load

• Serve on departmental, college, and university committees
  .
• Maintain an expectation of sustained, peer-reviewed creative activity or scholarly research
  .
• Incorporate AI applications and emerging technologies into coursework.
• Guide students in production design using equipment such as 3D printers and die cutters
  .
• Develop and maintain a forward-thinking curriculum aligned with current industry standards.
• Demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  .
• Contribute to the growth and vision of a regionally competitive Graphic Design program
  .
• Mentor students in career preparation, internships, and professional development
  .
• Build connections with design professionals, organizations, and industry partners
  .

• Hold an MFA or terminal degree in Graphic Design or Visual Communications
  , with demonstrated outstanding potential in research and/or creative activity
  .
• Undergraduate teaching experience is strongly preferred.
• Professional design experience is an asset.
• Be prepared to teach a range of undergraduate Graphic Design courses, including (but not limited to):
  Principles of Graphic Design
  , Typography
  , Corporate Identity Design
  , UX/UI
  , Motion Graphics
  , and Senior Studio in Graphic Design
  .
• Submit a professional portfolio showing significant achievement in graphic design and/or related contemporary design practice.
• Adobe Creative Suite mastery is required.
• Web development practices
  , Figma
  , and other relevant interactive design tools proficiency is expected.
• Demonstrate expertise in contemporary design technologies and willingness to explore and integrate AI-driven tools and emerging workflows
  .
• Demonstrate ability to adapt to evolving industry standards and prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing creative landscape.
• A strong commitment to foundational design principles
