Contact PhoneContact EmailPosition Details Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the JobThe Department of English at Sam Houston State University seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in American Literature after 1865. The successful candidate will show evidence of an active research agenda in American literature, but the focusis open. Preference will be given to those researching
African-American literature, Southern literature, or Latinxliterature. This position will also be responsible for advising students in the English Education double major. An earned PhD in English by August 21, 2027 is required. This position requires a presence at our Huntsville campus.
The chosen candidate will teach three courses per semester(in-person or online), with a 3/2 teaching load in the first twoyears. Teaching involves undergraduate and graduate-level coursesin any of the following areas:
- American literature after 1865
- World literature
- African-American literature
- Southern literature
- Multicultural literature
- First-year composition (typically once per year)
Other courses, such as English education classes focused onpedagogy, will vary with the candidate’s experience.

- Cultivating and maintaining an active research agenda
- Actively engaging in recruitment and curriculum development
A PhD in English from an accredited institution ( ABD candidatesconsidered). ABD candidates must have doctoral degree conferred bystart date.
Experience Required for the PositionDemonstrated background in Secondary English Education, such as teaching in K-12, certification to teach, earned degree in English Education, completion of student teaching, or substantial graduate coursework in Education. Evidence of an active research agenda that reflects the desiredspecialization in American literature.
