Mountain West - Crew Member - Spring (March) Start

American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a non‑profit conservation corps headquartered in Hurricane, Utah with projects throughout Utah and the Mountain West. ACE is looking for crew members to serve on meaning full conservation projects for 12 weeks full time. The position is part of Ameri Corps and offers free housing, food on project days, a living allowance of $400 per week, education award eligibility, and other benefits.

March 9th (term lengths may vary). Estimated end dates:
June or September (dependent on term length).

Location

Headquartered in Hurricane, Utah (projects located throughout Utah and Mountain West region).

Schedule

Project schedules vary. Members typically serve 8 days on / 6 days off or 4 days on / 3 days off. Remote projects may keep members near their project location during off days.

Position Description

Members serve in professionally supervised teams exploring future outdoor careers, learning practical field skills, and developing confidence as emerging leaders in conservation. Training is provided by professional staff and partners from the National Park Service, US Forest Service, BLM, US Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.

Field Work & Responsibilities
  • Habitat restoration
  • Trail construction and maintenance
  • Dry and wet stone masonry
  • Reforestation
  • Forest thinning
  • Plant identification
  • Fencing
  • Invasive species removal
  • Swamping
Tools & Equipment
  • Trail maintenance tools: mattocks, pulaskis, shovels, jacks, axes, chisels, etc.
  • Restoration equipment: herbicide backpack sprayers, spray bottles, GPS units, measuring tools.
  • Power Tools & Gas Equipment: chainsaws, brush‑cutters, drills, saws, power carriers, augers, air compressors.
Qualifications

Applicants must be prepared to perform physically challenging labor 10 hours a day. Expect to hike extended distances on rough terrain with backpacks, tools, and equipment, and spend 8 consecutive days in the field on each project. Work weather conditions range from below freezing to over 100°F; high winds, intense sunshine, rain, snow.

Required
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Able and willing to work in a group
  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather and hike moderate distances in rough terrain
  • Willingness to undergo and pass criminal history check
  • Good communication skills with a growth‑mindset
Preferred
  • Experience in hiking & navigation in steep terrain
  • Strong desire to enter conservation field as a natural resource professional
  • Experience or interest in volunteering in local communities
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, manual dexterity required for tools.
  • Ability tostoop, kneel, climb stairs, crouch.
  • Can lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Outdoor & indoor conditions; work varies with weather.
  • Noise: moderate to high from gas‑powered chainsaws and tools.
  • Domestic travel required.
Environmental Conditions & Hazards

May encounter extreme heat or cold, rain, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Members must conduct duties safely and represent ACE and Ameri Corps professionally. ACE has zero tolerance for illegal drugs & underage drinking; drug testing may be required.
