Children’s Library Assistant

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs a variety of library functions under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian & Assistant Supervisor. May supervise shelvers and student clerks. Does related work as required. This is a part time (20 hour) position;
Monday-Friday 10-2, but must be willing to help evenings and Saturdays as needed.

• Performs automated circulation functions including checkout, check in, and renewal of materials
• Shelves library materials
• Receive and direct phone calls
• Assists patrons with selection of library materials and reader’s advisory
• Assists patrons using the photocopier machine
• Assists with creating and promoting library services and events
• Assists with decorating the departments (Youth and YA), creating book displays, and coming up with passive programs on a monthly basis in collaboration with staff
• Other associated duties as assigned

Aptitude for library work; good understanding of basic aims and services of libraries;
Understanding of business and library ethics with relation to sensitive information; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; orderliness; accuracy; tact; adaptability; ability to get along with others; compassionate; courteous; displays leadership qualities; ability to make decisions; creativity; ability to communicate pleasantly and effectively with library staff and general public, especially children and young adults. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential.

Computer, cash register, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, scanner, DVD player, HDMI TV, Bluetooth speaker, tablet, iPad, and other equipment used in the department.

This position operates mainly indoors in an office setting and in direct customer service situations. There will be some travel required and some work outdoors at programs and events. This is a fully on‑site position.
