Position Overview

The Screed Operator is responsible for operating the paving machine and/or screed used to spread and level asphalt on highways, private roadways, parking lots, and driveways. The operator controls screed adjustments to achieve proper depth, grade, and finish in accordance with project specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the asphalt paver and make normal adjustments for the proper depth, grade, and finish cross section of asphalt material via screed extensions.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
  • Assist construction/paving crew with duties such as shoveling, raking, and wheelbarrow use.
  • Collaborate with crew members to apply asphalt per plan specifications and perform other tasks as directed by the crew foreman to meet daily schedules.
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe procedures and the environment.
  • Report any problems to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Follow daily task directions from the Foreman for each project or jobsite.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance of equipment; refer major problems to the supervisor.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-inspections with documentation in compliance with company policies.
  • Assist in training less experienced employees on proper operations, servicing, and repair of equipment to develop their abilities.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of asphalt experience required.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Previous knowledge of heavy equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations and construction sites.
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under varying conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist coworkers or supervisors as required.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas per OSHA/MSHA requirements, including face shield, safety shoes, and coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA/MSHA regulations.
Physical & Work Environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear; vision with correction as needed.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and in environments with noise, fumes, or moving mechanical parts.
  • Ability to exert varying physical effort, including lifting up to 10-20 lbs constantly, 25-50 lbs frequently, and 50-100 lbs occasionally.
