Introduction

The City of Idaho Falls Power Department is currently hiring a Power Supply Manager. In this role you will be responsible for strategic power supply management, energy portfolio optimization, and wholesale market operations for Idaho Falls Power.

Provides supervision to the Electric Dispatchers and Power Supply Analyst.

Salary

The salary for this role will be determined based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and overall alignment with the position. The expected salary range is $137,925 to $169,270.

This position manages the utility's power supply contracts, executes energy trading operations, and ensures cost-effective resource utilization while maintaining system reliability. The Power Manager serves as the primary liaison with Bonneville Power Administration, wholesale market participants, and regional trade organizations.

Energy Trading & Market Operations
  • Develop and execute day-ahead and balance-of-month energy trading strategies across wholesale markets using your knowledge of markets, the utility portfolio and in-depth research to make well-reasoned trades that lowers risk for the utility while also providing for lower overall power supply costs.
  • Manage bilateral energy transactions with counter parties in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC)
  • Develop and maintain existing models that optimize the energy portfolio through forward purchases, sales, and hedging strategies
  • Monitor real-time and forward electricity and natural gas market prices
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies for energy price volatility
  • Maintain relationships with energy brokers, traders, and other market participants
  • Requires approximately 5-8 days of travel per month
Contract Administration
  • Administer and optimize the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) power contract, including Slice/Block products
  • Negotiate bilateral contracts for energy purchases and sales
  • Ensure compliance with all contractual obligations and settlement processes
  • Coordinate with legal counsel on contract terms and dispute resolution
Resource Planning & Optimization
  • Develop hourly, daily, and seasonal load forecasts
  • Schedule energy resources to meet forecasted load at optimal cost
  • Coordinate with generation operations to maximize value from IFP owned hydroelectric portfolio, peaking plant and other managed resources.
  • Conduct economic analysis of resource options and supply alternatives
  • Participate in integrated resource planning and long-term supply strategy
  • Evaluate renewable energy integration opportunities
Financial & Budget Management
  • Assist in the development of the power supply budget and day to management of the budget to ensure compliance
  • Track and forecast power supply costs including purchased power and fuel expenses
  • Analyze market trends and provide financial projections
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and variance analysis
